Why use Cardnet?
We are ideally positioned to help you find the card acceptance equipment and services that are right for your specific business needs. This is because we're not tied to one single supplier - we have strong relationships with many of the UK's leading suppliers of electronic and integrated point of sale solutions.
You'll be guided through purchasing, installing and operating your card acceptance facility. And thanks to the flexibility of our solutions, we can adapt our services to what you need as your business grows and your needs change.
Cardnet is suitable for all types and sizes of business; but as a guide, you should be looking to take a minimum of approximately £1,000 per month on cards.
Your trading options
- Trading in-store / Card Present - This is for retailers who want to take card transactions face to face.
- Card Not Present (CNP) - Once you have confirmation from us, you can accept transactions from a cardholder on a written order form or over the telephone.
- Trading online - We can give you all the guidance you need to accept payments online. Initiatives such as Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode have been introduced to combat fraud and give you and your customers greater confidence. You can learn more at www.visaeurope.com and www.mastercardmerchant.com/securecode.
What cards you can accept
Your Cardnet facility allows you to accept many different types of cards. See below for the processing options available for each of the different card schemes.

Handling Foreign Currency
We process card transactions in a number of different currencies, with the option of settlement in either sterling or the relevant foreign currency. Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) lets you give MasterCard and Visa cardholders from overseas the option of being charged in their own currency at the point of sale. The other advantage of DCC is that your business will receive a share of the commission due on all currency transactions.
Point-of-sale Equipment & Integration
We offer a range of electronic terminals, all from approved suppliers and all with chip and PIN capability. In addition to standard desktop devices, we provide portable and mobile solutions. Across our whole range of equipment you can count on:
- Fast, safe automated payment of transactions, including 0800 authorisation calls.
- Efficient processing of each sale.
- The facility to accept electronic and online-only cards, including Maestro and Electron.
- Automated end of day reconciliation process.
- Compatibility with all major credit card schemes.
More and more businesses are investing in computerised point of sale and stock control systems. With the right software and hardware upgrades, many of these systems are able to process and authorise card transactions. We regularly test and approve many different software solutions for card authorisation and processing, and have relationships with most of the recognised suppliers. Our support team of specialist technicians is on hand to help you develop your own system - just contact us for a list of Cardnet approved suppliers.
Looking at costs
Different businesses have different needs, so we work with you to produce a competitive, tailor-made pricing solution. And by making all the figures clear, you can quickly make comparisons. Our charges are calculated by looking at the type of business you operate, and the volume and value of card transactions you process.
All service charges are paid by monthly Direct Debit. Our main charges comprise:
- A joining fee - this covers the cost of setting up your account, with a minimum 12 month agreement.
- Credit cards - we charge a percentage of the value of credit card payments you accept.
- Debit cards - a flat fee for each debit card transaction.
You can rent a terminal from one of our terminal vendors. The cost varies according to the type of terminal you choose.
Additional Services
- Online reporting tool - a secure website which enables you to manage your card payments through Cardnet online, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It improves management analysis and control, provides an additional fraud prevention tool and helps to reduce chargebacks, administrative costs and resources. Move through the demo at www.myclientline.net or download the ClientLine Quick Reference Guide for new customers.
- Address Verification Service (AVS) and Card Security Code (CSC) - extra security when accepting Card Not Present transactions. AVS allows you to check the numerical part of a customer's postcode and statement address; while CSC is the three digit number printed on the signature strip on the back of the card.
- Electronic mobile phone top-ups - available on selected terminals so you can top up your customers' mobile phone electronically and earn yourself extra income through commission.
- Purchasing Card - issued by companies to employees for business purchases. This is a fast growing segment of new payments, and avoids the need for paper invoices or VAT reporting.
- Cashback - you can offer the Purchase with Cashback service when a customer uses their Visa Debit, Debit MasterCard or Maestro card. Providing you have written confirmation from us.
- Visa Global Invoice Specification (VGIS) - enables you to send itemised invoices to your customers via the Visa Purchasing system.
- Gratuity - the transaction amount may be changed so customers can add a gratuity if you've been authorised by us; if your terminal provides this function; and if the cardholder has given their permission.
Securing cardholder data
We operate a mandatory Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) Compliance Management Service, delivered in association with our partner Sysnet Global Solutions. For most merchants this is through the completion and attestation of an annual self assessment questionnaire (SAQ) via our dedicated online portal. Please remember that compliance with PCI DSS must be maintained at all times and validated on an annual basis.
