Improving your card payment service
Thinking of trading online
If you're thinking of trading over the Internet we can give you all the guidance you need to accept payments online. To accept debit and credit card payments online you need a separate merchant account and our prior agreement to accept cards this way (even if you have an existing Cardnet facility). Your new merchant account number must be used for Internet sales only as all e-commerce transactions need to be identified separately in compliance with the card schemes' Electronic Commerce Indicator (ECI).
Initiatives such as Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode have been introduced to combat fraud over the Internet and give you and your customers greater confidence (learn more at www.visaeurope.com and www.mastercardmerchant.com/securecode). Much like chip and PIN for over the counter transactions, cardholders who register for these services will input a personal PIN or password to confirm they are the genuine cardholder.
Internet transactions are normally supplied using a Payment Service Provider (PSP), which needs to be approved by us. When choosing a PSP, you should make sure they support Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode.
Manage card payments through our online reporting tool
This is a secure website which enables you to manage your card payments through Cardnet online, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Access to your monthly statements.

- Download data onto standard spreadsheets, improving management control and analysis.

Extra security with the Address Verification Service (AVS) and Card Security (CSC)
These both give you extra security when accepting Card Not Present transactions. AVS allows you to check the numerical part of a customer's postcode and statement address with their card issuing bank. CSC is the three digit number printed on the signature strip on the back of the card, directly after the card number.
Greater efficiency with Visa Purchasing and improved VAT reporting
Many people now recognise the benefits of using Visa Purchasing, a way of streamlining the process of paying for goods and services. This doesn't just benefit buyers - you can provide better customer service and achieve your own process and cash flow efficiencies. Integral to Visa Purchasing is an improved VAT reporting process that has been fully endorsed by Customs & Excise.
The Visa Purchasing VAT process has been designed to operate at two different levels, so it can work with different supplier accounting routines and the needs of your customers.
- Visa Global Invoice Specification (VGIS) enables you to send itemised invoices to your customers via the Visa Purchasing system.
- Summary VAT allows less detailed information to be sent to your customers; in most cases, this still provides them with the necessary evidence to reclaim the VAT incurred.
Which of these levels is right for you depends on your customers' needs, your own accounting systems and the type of POS device you use.
Electronic mobile phone top-ups
This is available on selected terminals so you can top up your customers' mobile phone electronically and earn yourself extra income through commission.
Add value with more services
- Purchasing Card - issued by companies to employees for business purchases. This is a fast growing segment of new payments, and avoids the need for paper invoices or VAT reporting.
- Cashback - you can offer the Purchase with Cashback service when a customer uses their Visa Debit, Debit MasterCard or Maestro card. Provding you have recieved written confirmation from us.
- Gratuity - the transaction amount may be changed so customers can add a gratuity if you've been authorised by us; if your terminal provides this function; and if the cardholder has given their permission. If your electronic terminal is equipped with a pre-authorisation or 'tipping' facility, you may need a polling bureau to process your transactions.
Securing cardholder data
We operate a mandatory
Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) Compliance
Management Service, delivered in association with our partner
Sysnet Global Solutions. For most merchants this is through
the completion and attestation of an annual self assessment
questionnaire (SAQ) via our dedicated online portal. Please
remember that compliance with PCI DSS must be maintained at all
times and validated on an annual basis.
